Sermon & Almsgiving in Respect of Dr. Sumudu Thiwanka Ekanayake

On 26th April we managed to hold a sermon and an Almsgiving in respect to our fellow batch mate Dr. Sumudu Thiwanka at the Leprosy Hospital situated at Hendala.

In an Endeavour to inspire generosity towards less privileged fellow beings, we managed to donate an “Electric Water Boiler” to the Ward No 01, with the financial support extended by Jinesh, Anupama & few of the Gampaha 97 clan.

The Leprosy Hospital in Hendala, Wattala is the oldest hospital in Sri Lanka built by the Dutch in 1708 and is the first Leprosy hospital in South East Asia according to Dr. Dharshana Mohotti, the dedicated Medical Officer. Today, the hospital is a re-habilitation centre for the 58 patients, 16 of them female, who were unfortunate enough to get the disease and the deformities it brings at a time when there was no cure. Segregation of the patient to protect society was the solution at that time. The patients have languished in this dilapidated hospital with such historic significance for years. One patient came when he was 8 and is now 88 years old. Many of the patients do not have kith and kin anymore.

“I have taken this as a challenge because we as a society have a duty to rehabilitate these patients” revealed Dr. Mohotti, whom with this equally passionate staff doing their utmost to help the inmates who lacks even basic medication but lead contented lives. Further they requested to direct other donors who are interested in helping the society to give them a hand in providing for these unfortunate inmates at the Leprosy Hospital.

I am most grateful for the support and dedication of our Vice President Mr. Kelum Sirisena and the Medical Rrepresentative Dr. Hirosh Dissanayake in making all the arrangements which resulted in the success of this project.

Blood Donation & Health Camp

It is with great pleasure that I announce The Blood Donation and Health Camp organized by our 97 Group last Sunday was a success.
The event started with the sermon by the Nawane Saddhajeewa thero in memory of our dear batch mate Suranja Gurusinghe. Suranja’s wife, parents and his relations attended this event along with invitees from the main Old Boys Association and our group.

The sermon was followed by the Blood donation, in which Rev. Nawane Saddhajeewa thero and his mother also took part to donated blood. Over 52 patriotic persons, including our batch mates, security personal and ladies were among the Blood donors.

Headed by Dr. Hirosha Dissanayake, Dr. Ranil Jayawardena and Dr. Harindra Chaturanga (none other than our own group members) the Health camp was also held successfully. It should be mentioned that only a limited number of items were received on that day with regard to our efforts to collect items for the wounded war heroes, but we will continue this project to collect items till next week and thus you still have an opportunity to contribute to this worthy cause even if you could not make it on last Sunday.

Further I would be failing in my duty if I do not acknowledge the support given by executive committee for the year 2008/2009 and especially Hirosha, Kelum, Suranjith, Udara, Supoorna, Thepul, Amilanath, Isuru, Aruna and Malaka Lalanajeewa.

However in a final note I would like to draw your attention to the fact that only about 15 out of the entire Blood donors were from our group !
